Sodium sarcosinate

CAS: 4316-73-8

1. Basic Information

Name: Sodium sarcosinate
Alias: Sodium N-methylglycinate, Sarcosine sodium salt
CAS No.: 4316-73-8
Molecular Formula: C3H6N1O2Na1
Molecular Weight: 111.07
Category: Amino acid surfactant intermediate, organic chelating agent, daily chemical raw material

2. Physical and Chemical Properties

Physical Properties

  1. Appearance: White crystalline powder or light yellow transparent aqueous solution
  2. Odor: Slight characteristic amine odor
  3. Solubility: Freely soluble in water, methanol; slightly soluble in ethanol; insoluble in acetone, mineral oil
  4. Melting Range: 148–152 ℃
  5. Hygroscopy: Strongly hygroscopic, easy to agglomerate in humid air
  6. Aqueous property: Aqueous solution shows weak alkalinity, pH 8.5–10.0

Chemical Properties

  1. Molecular structure: N-methyl glycine sodium salt, contains secondary amine group and carboxylate group
  2. Surface activity: Raw material for sarcosinate anionic surfactants, undergoes acylation with fatty acids to produce mild cleansing agents
  3. Metal chelation: Carboxylate and amine groups form stable complexes with Fe, Cu, Zn ions, inhibit metal oxidation discoloration
  4. Thermal stability: Stable below 130 ℃; high temperature heating decomposes to release methylamine vapor
  5. Photostability: Moderately light-sensitive; long-term UV exposure turns light yellow
  6. Compatibility: Compatible with anionic, amphoteric surfactants; incompatible with strong mineral acids, heavy metal salts

3. Main Application Fields

1. Mild Surfactant Raw Material (Core Application)

Synthesize sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, myristoyl sarcosinate for facial cleanser, shampoo, baby care products, low irritation to skin and mucous membrane

2. Industrial Metal Cleaning & Corrosion Inhibitor

Additive for aluminum alloy, copper polishing liquid, remove surface oxide and prevent re-oxidation

3. Biochemical & Pharmaceutical Auxiliary

Amino acid intermediate, buffer regulator for biological culture medium

4. Printing & Dyeing Auxiliary

Levelling agent, dispersant for textile dyeing, improve dye uniformity

Safety Warning

Low-toxicity mild alkaline irritant powder. Dust irritates eyes, nasal tract and respiratory tract; long-term skin contact causes degreasing, dry itching. All operations carried out in ventilated fume hood with dust mask and nitrile gloves. Avoid mixing with strong acid to release irritating sarcosine. Waste water neutralized with weak acid before discharge; solid waste belongs to general organic industrial waste.
