This compound is a broad-spectrum imidazole antifungal agent and active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). It inhibits fungal cytochrome P450 14α-demethylase, disrupting ergosterol synthesis and impairing fungal cell membrane integrity, leading to cell death. Clinically, it is primarily used for vulvovaginal candidiasis (yeast infections), available as vaginal creams or suppositories. It also shows activity against dermatophytes, yeasts, and some Gram-positive bacteria. In pharmaceutical synthesis, it serves as a key reference standard and intermediate for antifungal drug development. Its high purity and stability make it suitable for both clinical formulations and laboratory research.
Inhalation of dust may irritate the respiratory tract, causing cough or shortness of breath. Skin contact can lead to redness, itching, or mild dermatitis. Eye contact may result in severe irritation, tearing, or corneal discomfort. Ingestion may cause nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain. Operations should be performed in a well-ventilated fume hood with dust masks, chemical-resistant gloves, and safety goggles. Avoid contact with strong oxidants, acids, and bases. Store separately from food, feed, and incompatible substances. In case of leakage, collect solids to prevent dust dispersion. Rinse skin with plenty of soapy water for 15 minutes. Flush eyes with clean water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention if irritation persists.
