Applications

Climbazole is a broad?spectrum imidazole antifungal agent developed by Bayer, widely used as a high?efficiency anti?dandruff and antipruritic additive in personal care formulations. It strongly inhibits Malassezia (e.g., Pityrosporum ovale), the fungus responsible for dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and scalp itching, with MIC values typically <0.06–1 μg/mL. It is incorporated into shampoos, conditioners, body washes, soaps, medicated toothpastes, and mouthwashes at 0.4%–0.8% to control flaking and odor. Beyond hair care, it serves as a preservative in cosmetics and topical pharmaceuticals, and as a biocide in industrial formulations. Its compatibility with surfactants, pH stability, and low irritation make it suitable for leave?on and rinse?off products. Unlike some azoles, it does not discolor or cause phototoxicity, maintaining long?term formulation stability.

Safety Information

Climbazole is classified as low?toxic with mild irritant properties (GHS: H302 – harmful if swallowed; H410 – very toxic to aquatic life with long?lasting effects). Inhalation of dust may cause mild respiratory/nasal irritation; wear a dust mask and ensure ventilation. Prolonged skin contact may cause dryness, redness, or itching; use chemical?resistant gloves and wash skin after handling. Eye contact causes stinging and foreign?body sensation; flush eyes with running water for ≥15 minutes and seek medical attention if symptoms persist. Ingestion may cause nausea, abdominal discomfort, or diarrhea; do not induce vomiting, rinse mouth, and seek medical help. It is non?flammable but may release toxic fumes (NO?, Cl?) if burned. Store away from strong oxidants, alkalis, and food. Dispose of waste per hazardous chemical regulations to prevent environmental contamination.
