Myrcene

CAS: 123-35-3

1. Basic Information

Name: Myrcene
Alias: β-Myrcene, 7-Methyl-3-methylene-1,6-octadiene
CAS No.: 123-35-3
Molecular Formula: C??H??
Molecular Weight: 136.24
Category: Terpene flavor raw material, synthetic fragrance intermediate, fine chemical solvent, plant extract monomer

2. Physical and Chemical Properties

Physical Properties

  1. Appearance: Colorless transparent oily liquid
  2. Odor: Fresh balsamic, resinous, mild citrus and hop-like green aroma
  3. Solubility: Miscible with ethanol, propylene glycol, mineral oil, toluene and most perfume solvents; insoluble in water, glycerin
  4. Boiling Point: 166–168 °C (760 mmHg)
  5. Density (20 °C): 0.790–0.794 g/cm3
  6. Refractive Index nD20: 1.465–1.469
  7. Flash Point: 44 °C
  8. Hygroscopy: Non-hygroscopic
  9. Aqueous property: Neutral non-polar terpene hydrocarbon, stable in neutral cold water at room temperature

Chemical Properties

  1. Molecular structure: Acyclic monoterpene with three carbon-carbon double bonds, high unsaturation
  2. Addition reaction: Undergoes hydrogenation, hydroformylation, epoxidation, Diels-Alder addition to synthesize linalool, geraniol, citronellol and other high-value fragrances
  3. Oxidation susceptibility: Easily oxidized by air; long-term exposure generates peroxides, resinification and yellow discoloration
  4. Polymerization tendency: Auto-polymerizes under heat, light or peroxide catalysis to form viscous terpene resin
  5. Photostability: Strongly light-sensitive; UV exposure accelerates oxidation and impurity generation
  6. Thermal stability: Stable below 100 °C; prolonged heating near boiling point triggers oxidation and polymerization
  7. Compatibility: Compatible with all non-polar fragrance oils and hydrocarbon solvents; incompatible with strong oxidants

3. Main Application Fields

1. Synthetic Fragrance Key Intermediate (Core Application)

Main raw material for industrial synthesis of linalool, menthol, geraniol, citronellol and their ester derivatives, widely used in perfume, soap, detergent flavors

2. Edible & Tobacco Flavor Raw Material

Used in citrus, fruit, spice and hop flavor formulas for beverages, candies and tobacco to enhance fresh green notes

3. Medical & Plant Extract Raw Material

Main active terpene in cannabis, bay leaf, hop extracts; used for natural plant essential oil research

4. Industrial Rubber & Coating Auxiliary

Modifier for terpene resin, tackifier for hot melt adhesives and printing inks
