Basic Information
Product Name: Sodium tungstate dihydrate
CAS Number: 10213-10-2
Alias: Disodium tungstate dihydrate, Sodium wolframate dihydrate
Molecular Formula: Na2WO4·2H2O
Molecular Weight: 329.85 g/mol
Structural Information
- Structure Type: Inorganic hydrated tungstate, typical ionic crystal compound
- Structural Features: Crystal consists of Na? cations and tetrahedral WO42? anions, combined with two water molecules of crystallization. The framework structure is stable under normal temperature, and crystal water will gradually escape when heated.
Physical & Chemical Properties
- Appearance: Colorless transparent monoclinic crystal or white crystalline powder
- Odor: Odorless
- Melting Point: 698 °C
- Density: 3.25 g/cm3 (20 °C)
- pH Value (5% aqueous solution): 8.0 ~ 9.5, weakly alkaline
- Solubility: Freely soluble in cold and hot water; practically insoluble in ethanol, ether and other organic solvents
- Stability: Stable under normal temperature and sealed environment. Dehydrate completely at 100–120 °C to form anhydrous sodium tungstate. Reacts with strong acid to generate tungstic acid precipitate. Non-flammable, non-volatile.
Synthesis & Applications
Synthesis Method
Industrial production mainly takes tungsten concentrate as raw material. React tungsten ore with concentrated sodium hydroxide solution under heating condition, filter to remove insoluble impurities. The filtrate is concentrated by evaporation, cooled for crystallization, centrifuged and dried to obtain finished dihydrate sodium tungstate.
Main Applications
- Chemical Industry: Basic raw material for manufacturing tungsten oxide, tungsten powder, tungsten carbide and other tungsten series products; widely used as chemical catalyst and analytical laboratory reagent.
- Textile Industry: Used as mordant, fire retardant and fabric weighting agent, improving fabric durability and flame resistance.
- Metallurgy & Surface Treatment: Alloy additive for smelting special steel and hard alloy; auxiliary agent for metal passivation and anti-corrosion treatment.
- Electroplating & Water Treatment: Functional additive for electroplating bath; used in industrial wastewater treatment to precipitate heavy metal ions.
- Other Fields: Applied in ceramic glazes, fluorescent materials and petroleum drilling auxiliary agents.
Safety & Storage Instructions
- Hazard Classification: Low toxicity, slight irritant to skin, eyes and respiratory tract
- Personal Protection: Wear dust-proof mask and chemical resistant gloves during operation. Avoid long-term inhalation of dust and direct contact with eyes and skin. In case of contact, rinse immediately with plenty of clean water.
- Storage Condition: Store in tightly closed containers. Place in cool, dry and well-ventilated warehouse. Strictly prevent moisture absorption, keep away from strong acids and corrosive substances.
- Transportation: Belongs to general inorganic chemicals. No special dangerous goods control. Prevent package breakage, dampness and violent collision during transportation.
