Terpinyl Acetate

CAS: 80-26-2

1. Basic Information

Name: Terpinyl acetate
Alias: α-Terpinyl acetate, 1-Methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)cyclohex-1-en-8-yl acetate
CAS No.: 80-26-2
Molecular Formula: C12H20O2
Molecular Weight: 196.29
Category: Monoterpene ester, synthetic & natural flavor raw material, daily fragrance solvent

2. Physical and Chemical Properties

Physical Properties

  1. Appearance: Colorless transparent oily liquid
  2. Odor: Fresh lavender, bergamot, sweet pine floral aroma
  3. Solubility: Miscible with ethanol, isopropanol, ethyl acetate, toluene, mineral oils; slightly soluble in glycerin; insoluble in water
  4. Boiling Point: 220–222 ℃
  5. Refractive Index nD20: 1.464–1.467
  6. Density (20℃): 0.933–0.938 g/cm3
  7. Flash Point: 85 ℃
  8. Hygroscopy: Non-hygroscopic
  9. Aqueous property: Neutral, stable in neutral water; hydrolyzes under strong acid/alkali heating to terpineol and acetic acid

Chemical Properties

  1. Molecular structure: Cyclic monoterpene acetate ester, contains one carbon-carbon double bond and acetate ester group
  2. Ester hydrolysis: Under acidic or alkaline heating conditions, decomposes into α-terpineol and acetic acid
  3. Double bond reactivity: Capable of hydrogenation, epoxidation, addition reactions
  4. Thermal stability: Stable below 200 ℃; long-time high temperature heating produces polymerized resin impurities
  5. Photostability: Slightly sensitive to strong UV light; prolonged irradiation turns pale yellow
  6. Compatibility: Excellent compatibility with all fragrance raw materials, perfume oils, cosmetics raw materials; incompatible with concentrated strong alkali, strong oxidants

3. Main Application Fields

1. Daily Fragrance (Core Application)

Main raw material for lavender, citrus, pine, floral, soap, detergent, shampoo, air freshener fragrances; large dosage, low cost, strong aroma retention

2. Food Flavor

Permitted food flavor additive for fruit, spice, baked essence, candy flavor formulation

3. Cosmetic Raw Material

Fragrance carrier and solubilizer for cream, lotion, perfume

4. Industrial Solvent

Slow-evaporating solvent for printing ink, coating auxiliary, resin diluent

Safety Warning

Low-toxicity mild irritant aromatic ester liquid. Vapor may cause slight eye and respiratory tract irritation; long-term skin contact will degrease skin and cause dry itching. All operations shall be carried out in ventilated fume hood with chemical-resistant gloves and safety goggles. Avoid mixing with strong alkali to prevent hydrolysis and aroma deterioration. Waste liquid can be recovered by distillation; residual liquid neutralized before discharge, treated as general organic hazardous waste by licensed institutions.
