1. Basic Information

Name: Calcium hydroxide
Alias: Slaked lime, hydrated lime, calcium dihydroxide
CAS No.: 1305-62-0
Molecular Formula: Ca1O2H2
Molecular Weight: 74.09

2. Physical and Chemical Properties

Physical Properties

  1. Appearance: White fine crystalline powder
  2. Odor: Odorless
  3. Solubility: Slightly soluble in cold water, solubility decreases as temperature rises; soluble in glycerol and sugar solution; insoluble in ethanol
  4. Melting Point: Decomposes at 580 °C, loses water to form calcium oxide
  5. Density: 2.24 g/cm3 (20 °C)
  6. Hygroscopicity: Moderately hygroscopic, easily absorbs carbon dioxide and moisture in air

Chemical Properties

  1. Molecular Structure: Ionic inorganic compound composed of one Ca1 cation and two O1H1 anions
  2. Alkalinity: Strong inorganic base, aqueous solution known as lime water, can neutralize various acids to produce calcium salts
  3. Carbonation reaction: Reacts with CO2 in air to generate Ca1C1O3 precipitate, solution turns turbid
  4. Thermal stability: Stable at room temperature; above 580 °C dehydrates into calcium oxide
  5. Photostability: Stable under natural light, no light-induced degradation
  6. Compatibility: Compatible with neutral inorganic fillers; incompatible with acids, ammonium salts, aluminum salts and strong oxidants

3. Main Application Fields

1. Construction Industry (Core Application)

  1. Raw material for mortar, plaster, lime coating; used for wall painting and foundation stabilization
  2. Soil conditioner for road foundation engineering to improve soil compactness

2. Environmental Water Treatment

  1. pH regulator for industrial wastewater, neutralizes acidic waste water and precipitates heavy metal ions
  2. Flue gas desulfurizer to remove sulfur dioxide and acid gas from boiler exhaust

3. Chemical & Agricultural Raw Material

  1. Raw material for manufacturing calcium salt, bleaching powder, calcium stearate and other chemical products
  2. Agricultural lime: adjust soil acid-base balance, kill soil bacteria and insect pests, supplement calcium element

4. Food & Pharmaceutical Excipient

  1. Food-grade acidity regulator and calcium fortifier for sugar processing and brewing industry
  2. pH adjuster and clarifying agent in pharmaceutical preparation production

Safety Warning

Strong alkaline substance. Dust severely irritates eyes, skin and respiratory tract; direct contact causes corrosive burns. Wear dust mask, alkali-resistant gloves and safety goggles during operation. In case of contact with skin or eyes, rinse thoroughly with plenty of clean water immediately. Seal tightly to avoid absorbing carbon dioxide in air and losing activity. Waste residue belongs to alkaline inorganic waste and needs centralized neutralization disposal.
