Shandong Huashang Chemical Co., Ltd. is a high-tech enterprise focused on industry of fine chemicals research and develop, produce and sale. Shandong Huashang Chemical Co., Ltd. is located in Shan Dong Ji Nan China. we have the ability to provide you high quality products. More than 90 % of our products are exported to developed countries and regions such as north America, Europe, Japan, South Korea and the Middle East.

1. Basic Information

Name: Povidone Iodine
Abbreviation: PVP-I
Alias: Polyvinylpyrrolidone iodine complex
CAS No.: 25655-41-8
Base polymer repeating unit formula: C6H9NO
Iodine content: Standard 9.0%–12.0%
Average molecular weight: Adjustable based on PVP carrier grade

2. Physical and Chemical Properties

Physical Properties

  1. Appearance: Reddish-brown amorphous powder; aqueous solution presents reddish-brown liquid
  2. Odor: Characteristic mild iodine odor
  3. Solubility: Freely soluble in water, ethanol, methanol; slightly soluble in acetone; insoluble in ether, alkanes and benzene
  4. Hygroscopicity: Strongly hygroscopic, absorbs moisture rapidly in humid air
  5. Film-forming property: PVP carrier forms uniform protective film on skin and mucosal surfaces after water evaporation
  6. Disinfectant feature: Slow-release free iodine for long-lasting bacteriostatic effect

Chemical Properties

  1. Molecular structure: Complex formed by coordination between polyvinylpyrrolidone and elemental iodine; free iodine is the core bactericidal component
  2. Broad-spectrum sterilization: Free iodine oxidizes microbial protein, effective against bacteria, fungi, viruses and spores
  3. Redox characteristic: Iodine can be reduced to iodide ions by reducing agents, accompanied by color fading
  4. pH stability: Stable in weakly acidic and neutral environments; iodine precipitates and decomposes under strong alkaline conditions
  5. Photodegradation: Sensitive to light; long-term illumination accelerates iodine volatilization and reduces effective iodine content
  6. Compatibility: Compatible with neutral surfactants; incompatible with reducing agents, heavy metal salts, strong alkalis and mercury-containing preparations

3. Main Application Fields

1. Medical Disinfectant Raw Material (Core Application)

  1. Skin preoperative disinfection, wound antisepsis, mucosal disinfection for gynecology, stomatology and burn care
  2. Raw material for disinfectant lotion, ointment, suppository and surgical scrub formulations

2. Daily Sanitation Products

Raw material for hand sanitizer, household surface disinfectant and feminine care antibacterial lotion

3. Aquaculture Disinfectant

Water body and fish body disinfectant to kill pathogenic bacteria and viruses in aquaculture ponds

4. Veterinary Disinfectant

Disinfection agent for livestock and poultry farm environment, animal wound and udder antisepsis
