1. Basic Info

Name: Sodium cyanoborohydride
Alias: NaBH3CN
CAS No.: 25895-60-7
Molecular Formula: C1H3B1N1Na1
Molecular Weight: 62.84

2. Physical & Chemical Properties

Physical Properties

  1. Appearance: White crystalline powder
  2. Odor: Slight cyanide characteristic odor
  3. Solubility: Soluble in methanol, ethanol, THF, DMF; slightly soluble in water; insoluble in benzene, hexane
  4. Melting Point: 242–244 ℃ (decompose)
  5. Density (20℃): 1.2 g/cm3
  6. Hygroscopy: Strongly hygroscopic, absorbs water rapidly in air
  7. Stability in solution: Stable in weakly acidic environment (pH 3–4); decomposes rapidly under strong acid to release toxic hydrogen cyanide gas

Chemical Properties

  1. Molecular structure: Borohydride reducing agent containing cyano group, mild selective reducing agent
  2. Selective reduction: Preferentially reduce imine, Schiff base without reducing aldehyde, ketone, ester, carboxylic acid
  3. Hydrolysis reaction: Contact with strong acid releases highly toxic HCN gas; slow hydrolysis in neutral water to generate borane and cyanide
  4. Reducing activity: Milder than sodium borohydride, stable in acidic buffer, suitable for reductive amination reaction
  5. Thermal decomposition: Decompose above melting point, release cyanide and borane toxic fumes
  6. Reaction with oxidants: Violent reaction with strong oxidizing agents, risk of combustion
  7. Compatibility: Only compatible with anhydrous weakly polar solvents; strictly prohibited from mixing with strong acid, strong oxidants, water long-term contact

3. Main Application Fields

1. Organic Synthesis Reductive Amination Reagent (Core Application)

  1. Key reducing agent for reductive amination of aldehydes/ketones with amines to synthesize secondary/tertiary amines
  2. Synthetic raw material for pharmaceutical amine intermediates, peptide modification

2. Biochemical Labeling Reagent

Reductive amination labeling reagent for saccharides, protein amino group modification experiments

3. Fine Chemical Intermediate Synthesis

Reduction of iminium salt, heterocyclic imine compounds to prepare amine derivatives

4. Laboratory Special Reduction Reagent

Selective reduction reagent for complex multi-functional group organic molecules
