Basic Information

Product Name: Sodium methanolate
CAS Number: 124-41-4
Alias: Sodium methoxide, Sodium methylate, Methanol sodium salt
Chemical Full Name: Sodium methanolate
Molecular Formula: CH?NaO
Molecular Weight: 54.02
EINECS: 204-699-5

Structural Information

  • Structure Type: Strong alkaline organic base fine chemical catalyst
  • Structural Features: Ionic compound composed of methoxide anion (CH?O?) and sodium cation (Na?); super strong basicity, excellent nucleophilic catalytic activity, high reactivity towards ester exchange, condensation and alkylation reactions
  • Characteristic: Core industrial catalyst for biodiesel synthesis, widely used in organic synthesis, pharmaceutical and grease chemical industries

Physical & Chemical Properties

  • Appearance: White amorphous powder (solid grade); colorless transparent liquid (methanol solution grade, usually 25-30% concentration)
  • Odor: Irritating methanol odor
  • Melting Point: 127 °C (decomposes, solid grade)
  • Density (20℃): 1.05 g/cm3 (solid); 0.96 g/cm3 (30% methanol solution)
  • Solubility: Freely soluble in methanol, ethanol; slightly soluble in ether, benzene; insoluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons; reacts violently with water to generate methanol and sodium hydroxide with significant heat release
  • Stability: Extremely sensitive to water and air; rapidly absorbs moisture and CO? in air to decompose into sodium carbonate and methanol; strong alkaline, reacts violently with acids; flammable, burns under open flame and high temperature to release toxic carbon monoxide and sodium oxide fumes

Synthesis & Applications

Production Method

Reaction of methanol with metallic sodium, or dehydration reaction of methanol with sodium hydroxide under dehydrant, followed by vacuum drying to obtain solid product, or formulated into standard methanol solution.

Main Applications

  1. Biodiesel synthesis core catalyst: Ester exchange reaction catalyst for converting animal and vegetable oils into fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel)
  2. Organic synthesis strong base catalyst: For ester exchange, condensation, alkylation and etherification reactions, such as synthesis of acrylates and polyesters
  3. Pharmaceutical intermediate synthesis: Raw material for production of vitamins, sulfonamides, antihistamines and other drugs
  4. Grease chemical industry: For oil ester exchange and modification, production of emulsifiers and surfactants
  5. Other applications: Precursor for synthesis of other alkoxides and organometallic compounds

Safety & Storage Instructions

GHS Hazard Classification
