CAS Number: 13601-08-6
Alias: Tetraamminepalladium dinitrate, Diamminetetrapalladium nitrate
Molecular Formula:Pd(NH3)42
Molecular Weight: 300.56
IUPAC Name: tetraamminepalladium(2+) dinitrate

Structural Information

  • Structure Type: Inorganic coordination complex, noble metal palladium ammine nitrate
  • Structural Features: Central Pd2? ion forms square planar coordination with four NH3 ligands; two nitrate ions as counterions; soluble in water, easy to decompose upon heating to release ammonia and nitrogen oxides, widely used as palladium electroplating raw material

Physical & Chemical Properties

  • Appearance: Colorless to pale orange crystalline powder
  • Odor: Ammonia odor when exposed to air
  • Melting Point: Decomposes above 120 °C without melting
  • Density: ~2.0 g/cm3
  • Solubility: Freely soluble in water; slightly soluble in dilute ammonia solution; insoluble in ethanol, acetone, ether
  • Stability: Hygroscopic; stable under sealed low-temperature storage; decomposes on heating, releases NH3, NOx toxic fumes; strong oxidizing property from nitrate group; reacts violently with reducing agents, organic matter, combustibles

Synthesis & Applications

Production Method

Palladium metal dissolves in nitric acid to generate palladium nitrate solution, excess concentrated ammonia water is added to precipitate and redissolve to form tetraamminepalladium(II) nitrate, recrystallized and dried.

Main Applications

  1. Electroplating industry: Main raw material for alkaline palladium plating solution, for electronic component plating, jewelry palladium plating
  2. Catalyst precursor: Raw material for preparing palladium supported catalysts
  3. Chemical analysis: Standard palladium reagent, precious metal separation and purification intermediate
  4. Electronic material manufacturing: Palladium circuit coating precursor

Safety & Storage Instructions
