Classification: Organophosphorus compound, phosphate ester, organic solvent, plasticizer, extractant, defoamer, flame retardant, organic intermediate, research reagent, industrial additive

Physical & Chemical Properties

Tributyl phosphate (TBP) is a colorless, almost odorless transparent liquid, with good fluidity at room temperature. It is slightly soluble in water (165mL water can dissolve 1mL TBP), and can be miscible with most organic solvents such as ethanol, methanol, acetone, benzene, kerosene and dodecane. It is stable under normal temperature and pressure, but is sensitive to high temperature and strong acid/strong base conditions—long-term heating above 200°C may cause decomposition, and hydrolysis may occur under strong acid or strong base conditions to generate phosphoric acid and n-butanol; it will form hazardous and explosive red oil when in contact with concentrated nitric acid. Its density is 0.9766 g/cm3 (20/4°C, measured value), boiling point is 289°C at 1.33kPa, 150-180°C at 1.333-0.667kPa (distillation range), melting point is -80°C (literature value), flash point (open) is 146°C, ignition point is 204°C, viscosity is 3.7 mPa·s, relative vapor density (air=1) is 8.86, and LogP is 4.5 at 20°C. It has no obvious hygroscopicity, but needs to be stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated environment to avoid contact with incompatible substances[3].
Key physical and chemical parameters are detailed in the specification table below, meeting the requirements of high-purity industrial grade, reagent grade, research grade and extraction grade, complying with relevant industrial and laboratory specifications.

Main Uses

Tributyl phosphate (TBP) is an important organophosphorus compound with broad application prospects in industrial production, nuclear industry, chemical synthesis, coating and other fields, mainly used as extractant, plasticizer, solvent and defoamer:
  • Nuclear Industry: It is a core extractant in the solvent extraction process of uranium, plutonium and thorium. A 15-40% (usually about 30%) solution of TBP in kerosene or dodecane is used in the liquid-liquid extraction of uranium, plutonium and thorium from spent uranium nuclear fuel rods dissolved in nitric acid, and is also used in the Purex process of nuclear reprocessing and chemical uranium enrichment[3].
  • Extraction Industry: Used as an extractant for rare earth metals, cobalt, iridium, manganese, molybdenum, palladium, platinum, rhodium, technetium, tungsten and other metals, which can form stable hydrophobic complexes with these metals, realizing the separation and purification of metals from ores or solutions[3].
  • Plastic & Coating Industry: Used as a main plasticizer for cellulose esters such as nitrocellulose and cellulose acetate, as well as polyvinyl chloride and chlorinated rubber, which can improve the flexibility and processability of products; it is also used as a solvent and defoamer in coatings, inks, adhesives (such as veneer plywood adhesives) and water-thinned paints, with good defoaming effect but poor foam inhibition performance[3].
  • Industrial Additives: Used as an anti-foaming agent in detergent solutions, ethylene glycol-borax antifreeze solutions, emulsions and cement; added to oil-based lubricants to increase oil film strength; used in mercerizing liquids to improve wetting properties; also used as a heat-exchange medium and flame retardant for cellulose fabrics such as cotton.
  • Research & Laboratory Application: Used as a research reagent in organic chemistry, analytical chemistry and nuclear chemistry experiments, including metal extraction separation, gas chromatography fixed liquid, and determination of molybdenum by colorimetry; it is suitable for laboratory research and small-batch experimental production.
  • Other Fields: Used as a solvent in synthetic resins, gums, herbicide and fungicide concentrates; also used in the production of herbicides, insecticides and fungicides, and as a de-foamer and plasticizer in various consumer products[3].

Packaging & Storage

Packaging Method

Lab/Research Grade: 10mL, 50mL, 100mL sealed glass bottles; 500mL, 1L HDPE plastic bottles with PTFE liners, suitable for laboratory research and small-batch testing (liquid packaging, avoiding leakage).
Industrial Grade & Extraction Grade: 25kg plastic barrels, 200kg galvanized iron drums, IBC (intermediate bulk container) and ISO-TANK; customized packaging available per customer requirements, complying with industrial chemical packaging specifications. 20′ container can load corresponding quantities according to packaging specifications for industrial batch supply[3].

Storage Method

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse at a temperature of 0-30°C (room temperature storage is acceptable, avoiding high temperature). Keep containers tightly sealed to prevent leakage, volatilization and contamination. Avoid contact with strong oxidants, strong acids, strong bases and concentrated nitric acid (to prevent the formation of explosive red oil); keep away from fire, heat sources and direct sunlight. It is flammable and harmful, so it should be stored separately from food, edible additives and other incompatible substances, and stored in accordance with the regulations for toxic chemicals. Shelf life is 24 months under standard sealed, cool and dry storage conditions; the opened products should be used up within 6 weeks to ensure purity and performance, and the container should be sealed in time after use[3].
