Basic Information

Product Name: Enrofloxacin; Alias: Baytril, 1-Cyclopropyl-6-fluoro-4-oxo-1,4-dihydro-7-(4-ethyl-1-piperazinyl)-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid, Enrofloxacin base
CAS Number: 93106-60-6 (MDL: MFCD00868595; EINECS: 618-911-2)
Molecular Formula: C??H??FN?O?
Molecular Weight: 359.39 g/mol
Structural Formula: 1-Cyclopropyl-6-fluoro-4-oxo-1,4-dihydro-7-(4-ethyl-1-piperazinyl)-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid (a fluoroquinolone compound with cyclopropyl, fluoro, piperazinyl and carboxylic acid functional groups)
Classification: Fluoroquinolone antimicrobial agent, veterinary drug raw material, antibacterial drug, organic heterocyclic compound, pharmaceutical intermediate (veterinary use)

Physical & Chemical Properties

Enrofloxacin is a pale yellow to light beige crystalline powder or crystalline needle-like powder, odorless and tasteless, with slight hygroscopicity. It is very slightly soluble in water, slightly soluble in methanol (soluble when heated), slightly soluble in chloroform, slightly soluble in dimethylformamide, and practically insoluble in hexane and ether; it is soluble in dilute potassium hydroxide solution and soluble in acidic or alkaline conditions. Its pKa value is 6.43±0.41 (predicted), showing weak acidity. It is stable under normal temperature and pressure, but is sensitive to light—long-term exposure to light will deepen its color, and it may decompose when exposed to high temperature (above 250°C) or strong oxidants, generating harmful fumes. Its density is 1.385±0.06 g/cm3 (25°C, predicted), boiling point is 560.5±50.0°C at 760 mmHg (predicted), melting point is 221-226°C (melting with decomposition), and vapor pressure is <0.0001 mmHg at 25°C with a LogP of 2.9 at 20°C. It is prone to absorb moisture and agglomerate when stored in an environment with high relative humidity.
Key physical and chemical parameters are detailed in the specification table below, meeting the requirements of high-purity veterinary pharmaceutical grade (USP/ChP Veterinary), feed additive grade and research grade.

Main Uses

Enrofloxacin is the first animal-specific fluoroquinolone antimicrobial agent developed by Bayer AG in 1987, with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, mainly used in the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections in animals, and also used in related research fields:
  • Veterinary Pharmaceutical Industry: Used as a veterinary antibacterial drug for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections in livestock, poultry and aquatic products. It has strong inhibitory and killing effects on Gram-negative bacteria (such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Pasteurella) and Gram-positive bacteria (such as Staphylococcus aureus), and is clinically used to treat respiratory tract infections, digestive tract infections, urinary tract infections and skin and soft tissue infections in pigs, chickens, cattle, sheep and aquatic animals. It can be made into injections, tablets, powders, premixes and other preparations for oral or injection administration.
  • Feed Additive Industry: Used as a feed additive to improve the disease resistance of livestock and poultry, promote growth and improve feed conversion rate. It is added to the feed in an appropriate proportion to prevent bacterial infections during the breeding process, reduce the incidence of diseases, and improve the breeding efficiency, complying with national veterinary drug and feed additive standards.
  • Veterinary Pharmaceutical Synthesis: Key raw material for the synthesis of enrofloxacin veterinary preparations (injections, tablets, premixes). It is used to produce high-purity veterinary formulations that meet international pharmacopoeia standards (USP/ChP Veterinary), ensuring drug efficacy and safety for animal use.
  • Biological & Veterinary Research: Used as a research reagent in veterinary microbiology experiments, including bacterial sensitivity testing, antibacterial mechanism research of fluoroquinolone drugs, and in vitro drug screening for animal bacterial diseases. It is also used in preclinical research on new veterinary antibacterial drugs and the evaluation of drug safety and efficacy.

Packaging & Storage

Packaging Method

Lab/Research Grade: 5mg, 1g, 5g, 10g sealed glass bottles or aluminum foil bags (filled with inert gas); 100g, 500g HDPE plastic bottles with PTFE liners, suitable for laboratory research and small-batch testing.
Veterinary Pharmaceutical Grade & Feed Additive Grade: 1kg, 5kg, 25kg/bag (inner PE bag with desiccant, outer three-layer kraft paper bag or polypropylene woven bag); 50kg/100kg galvanized iron drum with PTFE liner and nitrogen-sealed; customized packaging available per customer requirements (such as 100ml, 250ml, 500ml bottles for injection-grade preparations), complying with GMP standards for veterinary pharmaceutical raw materials and feed additive specifications.

Storage Method

Store in a cool, dry, dark, and well-ventilated warehouse at a temperature of 2-8°C (refrigerated storage recommended). Keep containers tightly sealed and protected from light to prevent moisture absorption, oxidation and discoloration (avoid light-induced color change to orange-red). Avoid contact with water, strong oxidants, strong acids and strong bases; keep away from fire, heat sources, and direct sunlight. Do not refrigerate or freeze in some preparation forms, and if precipitation occurs due to low temperature, it can be redissolved by warming and shaking. Diluted preparations should be used within 24 hours and stored in amber glass bottles at 4-40°C. It is sensitive to light and humidity, so strict moisture-proof, anti-light and low-temperature measures must be taken. Shelf life is 24 months under standard sealed, low-temperature, and dry storage conditions (complying with GMP storage requirements for veterinary drugs).
