Physical & Chemical Properties

Pancreatin is a beige to tan crystalline powder with a slight characteristic odor and no moldy odor, and it has hygroscopicity. It is soluble or partly soluble in water, forming a slightly turbid solution, and practically insoluble in ethanol (96%) and ether. Its pH value is 5-6 (20°C, 10g/L in H?O), and it is stable under proper storage conditions but incompatible with alcohols and strong acids. It decomposes when exposed to acid, heat, heavy metals and protein precipitants such as tannic acid, resulting in loss of enzymatic activity. Its bulk density is 400kg/m3, density is 1.4-1.52 g/cm3, boiling point is 462.8±14.0 °C at 760 mmHg, flash point is 350.6±11.0 °C, and vapor pressure is 0Pa at 25℃ with a LogP of -1.3 at 20℃ and pH5.7-5.8.
Key physical and chemical parameters are detailed in the specification table below, meeting the requirements of high-purity pharmaceutical grade, food grade and industrial grades.

Main Uses

Pancreatin is a complex mixture of digestive enzymes extracted from porcine, bovine or sheep pancreas, mainly containing amylase, trypsin and lipase, with wide applications in pharmaceutical, food, industrial and research fields:
  • Pharmaceutical Industry: Used as a substitute therapy for insufficient exocrine pancreatic function caused by various reasons such as cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic resection, gastrectomy, and tumor-induced pancreatic duct or common bile duct obstruction. It can hydrolyze proteins, starches and fats, improving digestive absorption disorders in patients with pancreatic insufficiency, and is often used in combination with sodium bicarbonate to enhance efficacy.
  • Food Industry: Used as a food additive, it is applied in meat tenderization, utilization of minced meat, production of condiments, fermentation assistance, and improvement of dairy products and plant proteins. It can hydrolyze animal proteins to generate flavor peptides for bone soup seasonings and savory flavors, and assist in protein hydrolysis in soy sauce brewing to promote flavor formation.
  • Industrial Field: Used in leather unhairing, silk degumming, silver recovery from film, and as a feed additive. It can replace sodium sulfide for environmentally friendly leather unhairing process, reduce wastewater COD, and improve the digestibility of feed protein when used as a feed additive.
  • Research & Development: Used in in vitro digestibility analysis, such as in vitro pepsin-pancreatin digestion experiments to estimate lower gut digestibility, and in cell digestion experiments (e.g., 0.25% concentration for adherent cell digestion). It is also used to test the sensitivity of cellulolytic bacteria inhibitors and in biochemical research related to digestive enzymes.

Packaging & Storage

Packaging Method

Lab Grade: 10g, 25g, 50g, 100g sealed glass bottles or aluminum foil bags (filled with desiccant); 500g, 1kg HDPE plastic bottles with PTFE liners, suitable for laboratory research and small-batch testing.
Industrial Grade: 5kg, 25kg/bag (inner PE bag with desiccant, outer three-layer kraft paper bag or polypropylene woven bag); 50kg/100kg galvanized iron drum with PTFE liner and sealed; customized packaging available per customer requirements, including 50g, 250g, 1kg specifications for food and pharmaceutical use.

Storage Method

Store in a cool, dry, dark, and well-ventilated warehouse at a temperature of 2-8°C (refrigerated storage recommended). Keep containers tightly sealed and protected from light to prevent moisture absorption, oxidation and loss of enzymatic activity. Avoid contact with water, strong oxidants, strong acids and alcohols; keep away from fire, heat sources, and direct sunlight. It is sensitive to heat and humidity, so strict moisture-proof and anti-high temperature measures must be taken. Shelf life is 18 months under standard sealed, low-temperature, and dry storage conditions.
