Product Description
1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (abbreviated as BMIMBF?) is a typical hydrophilic ionic liquid. It appears as a colorless to light yellow clear oily liquid, with low volatility, high thermal stability, and good solubility in polar solvents. It is non-flammable, environmentally friendly, and widely used as a green solvent, catalyst carrier, and electrolyte in organic synthesis, electrochemistry, separation technology, and material science.
Uses
Organic Synthesis: Serves as a green reaction medium for hydrogenation, asymmetric hydrogenation, Suzuki cross-coupling, and other organic reactions, enhancing reaction selectivity, efficiency, and product purity while reducing environmental pollution.
Electrochemistry: Used as an electrolyte component in lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, metal-air batteries, and electrochemical sensors, thanks to its wide electrochemical window, good ionic conductivity, and high thermal stability.
Separation Technology: Acts as an efficient extractant for extractive desulfurization of liquid fuels (removing dibenzothiophene), and is also used in the separation and purification of organic compounds, metal ions, and biomolecules.
Material Science & Biocatalysis: Functions as a template or solvent for preparing porous materials, nanoparticles, and polymer composites; used as an enzyme immobilization carrier to improve enzyme activity and stability in biocatalytic reactions.
Molecular Formula & Structure

- Molecular Weight: 226.02 g/mol
- IUPAC Name: 1-butyl-3-methylimidazol-3-ium tetrafluoroborate
- EC Number: 422-520-8
- SMILES Code: CCCCn1cc[n+](C)c1.[B-](F)(F)F
- Chemical Structure: An ionic liquid composed of a cation (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) and an anion (tetrafluoroborate, BF??). The cation has an imidazole ring with a butyl group and a methyl group substituted at the 1st and 3rd positions, and the weakly coordinating anion ensures its good solubility and chemical stability.
- Appearance: Colorless to light yellow clear oily liquid, no visible impurities, no turbidity.
- Density: 1.20–1.22 g/cm3 (20 °C); Melting Point: -83 °C to -75 °C (low melting point, liquid at room temperature).
- Boiling Point: Decomposes above 300 °C (no obvious boiling point, decomposes at high temperature); Flash Point: 288 °C (closed cup), non-flammable.
- Refractive Index: 1.415–1.425 (20 °C); Viscosity: 100–105 cP (25 °C).
- Solubility: Miscible with water, ethanol, methanol, and dichloromethane; slightly soluble in ethyl acetate, ether, and alkanes; insoluble in petroleum ether.
- Stability: Hygroscopic, easy to absorb moisture in the air; stable under dry and inert atmosphere (nitrogen or argon); decomposes slowly in the presence of water, especially under high temperature; incompatible with strong oxidizing agents and strong acids.
- Toxicity: Toxic if swallowed; causes skin and eye irritation; harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects; avoid direct contact and inhalation of vapors.
Synthesis & Storage
- Synthesis: Prepared by two-step reaction: 1. Quaternization: 1-methylimidazole reacts with 1-bromobutane at 60–80 °C to form 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (BMIMBr); 2. Anion exchange: BMIMBr undergoes anion exchange with sodium tetrafluoroborate (NaBF?) or tetrafluoroboric acid (HBF?) in an organic solvent (such as acetonitrile), followed by separation, washing, and drying to obtain the product.
- Storage: Sealed in airtight, moisture-proof, light-proof containers; stored in a cool, dry, dark place (recommended storage temperature <15 °C) under inert gas (nitrogen) protection; avoid moisture, direct sunlight, high temperature, and contact with incompatible substances; shelf life is 12–18 months when unopened.
- Safety: Operate in a well-ventilated fume hood; wear professional protective gear (nitrile gloves, goggles, lab coat, and respirator); use non-sparking tools; avoid inhalation of vapors and direct skin/eye contact; if in contact with skin, rinse with plenty of water; if in contact with eyes, rinse with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical advice; keep away from food, feed, and aquatic environments; dispose of waste in accordance with relevant environmental regulations.
