Product Description
Calcium phosphate (CAS: 7758-87-4), also known as tricalcium phosphate (TCP), is a white odorless tasteless powder. It is a common inorganic compound, widely used as food additive, feed supplement, pharmaceutical excipient and material for bone graft substitutes.
Molecular Formula & Structure
Molecular Formula: Ca?(PO?)? (or approximate composition 10CaO·3P?O?·H?O); Molecular Weight: ~310.18 (Ca?(PO?)?) or ~1004.64 (10CaO·3P?O?·H?O).
Physical & Chemical Properties
- Appearance: White, odorless, tasteless amorphous or crystalline powder, stable in air
- Key Properties: Melting Point ~1670 °C; density ~3.14 g/cm3; almost insoluble in water, soluble in dilute hydrochloric/nitric acid
- Chemical Traits: Stable under normal conditions; reacts with sulfuric acid to form phosphates; can be converted to different crystalline forms by calcination
- Toxicity: Low toxicity; mild irritation to skin/eyes; safe for food and feed use at recommended doses.
Synthesis & Storage
- Synthesis: Mainly via wet chemical precipitation (calcium salt + phosphate solution, pH-controlled) or calcination; also from natural phosph or animal bone
- Storage: Sealed, cool/dry/well-ventilated place; avoid moisture, incompatible substances; keep away from water sources to prevent environmental contamination
- Safety: Wear protective gear; avoid dust inhalation and contact; clean up spills promptly; dispose as per regulations.
