Product Description

Zirconium dioxide (CAS: 1314-23-4), also known as zirconia or zirconium(IV) oxide, is a high-performance inorganic oxide with exceptional thermal stability and chemical resistance. It is widely utilized in advanced ceramics, refractory materials, optical coatings, and as a catalyst support. Its high melting point, excellent mechanical strength, and biocompatibility make it suitable for dental implants and industrial components.

Molecular Formula & Structure

Molecular Formula: ZrO?

Physical Properties

  • Appearance: White, odorless crystalline powder
  • Melting Point: 2,700–2,715 °C
  • Density: ~5.89 g/cm3 (25 °C)
  • Solubility: Insoluble in water; soluble in hot concentrated sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid
  • Stability: Chemically inert under normal conditions; resistant to most acids and bases
  • Crystal Forms: Monoclinic (room temp), tetragonal (>1,100 °C), cubic (>1,900 °C)

Chemical Properties

  • CAS Number: 1314-23-4; EINECS: 215-227-2
  • Chemical Type: Inorganic oxide, ceramic material, refractory agent
  • Molecular Weight: 123.22
  • Refractive Index: ~2.13–2.2
  • Thermal Conductivity: ~1.85 W/(m·K)
  • Application Type: Raw material for ceramics, refractories, optical coatings, and dental ceramics
  • Toxicity: Low toxicity; may cause mild skin/eye irritation

Synthesis Method

  • Raw Materials: Zircon sand (ZrSiO?), caustic soda, hydrochloric acid, precipitant (ammonia)
  • Synthesis Route: Alkali fusion → acid leaching → purification → precipitation → calcination
  • Reaction Steps: Fuse zircon sand with NaOH at high temperature, leach with HCl to obtain zirconium oxychloride, purify via solvent extraction, precipitate Zr(OH)? with ammonia, then calcine at 800–1,000 °C to produce ZrO? powder

Storage & Safety

  • Storage: Store in a sealed, dry place at room temperature; avoid moisture and strong oxidants
  • Package: Moisture-proof sealed containers (1 kg/bag, 25 kg/drum)
  • Safety: Avoid inhalation of dust; wear protective gloves and goggles; wash skin thoroughly after contact
  • Hazard: Thermal decomposition emits no toxic fumes; non-flammable and non-explosive
