4-Cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (CAS 40817-08-1), also known as 5CB, 4'-n-Pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl is a commonly used nematic liquid crystal compound. It has a molecular formula of C??H??N and a molecular weight of 249.35 Da. It usually appears as a white to pale yellow crystal or cloudy white nematic liquid, and undergoes phase transition from crystalline state to nematic state at 22.5 °C, and from nematic state to isotropic state at 35.0 °C. As a key liquid crystal monomer, it is widely used in the preparation of TN and STN type mixed liquid crystals, and is an important material for liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and related optoelectronic devices.
1. Physical Properties
White to pale yellow crystal or cloudy white nematic liquid; density 1.008–1.022 g/mL at 25°C, refractive index n 20/D 1.532 (n//=1.71, n⊥=1.53); melting point 22.5–34 °C, boiling point 140-150 °C (0.5 mm Hg), flash point >230 °F; slightly soluble in chloroform and methanol, insoluble in water; stable under normal room temperature and dry conditions.

A nematic liquid crystal compound with a biphenyl core structure, containing cyano and pentyl functional groups; stable under recommended storage conditions, undergoes obvious phase transition characteristics (crystalline → nematic → isotropic) within a certain temperature range; compatible with other liquid crystal monomers, and can be mixed to prepare liquid crystal materials with different performance requirements; not easy to decompose under normal conditions, and may undergo substitution reactions under strong reaction conditions.
