Chemical Properties
It consists of purplish-black scaly or platy crystals with a metallic luster. It is brittle, and its vapor is purple. It has a characteristic pungent odor. Slightly soluble in water, with solubility increasing with temperature; sparingly soluble in sulfuric acid; readily soluble in organic solvents; iodine is also readily soluble in chlorides and bromides; even more readily soluble in iodide solutions; it can dissolve sulfur, selenium, ammonium, and alkali metal iodides, as well as metal iodides such as aluminum, tin, and titanium.
Uses
Mainly used in the manufacture of iodides, for the production of pesticides, feed additives, dyes, iodine tincture, test papers, and pharmaceuticals. It is used to prepare equivalent solvents, determine the iodine value, and standardize the concentration of sodium thiosulfate solutions. The solution can be used as a disinfectant. In photographic plate making, it is used in the preparation of iodine preparations and thinning solutions.
