This primary alkyl chloride is a critical aliphatic fine chemical intermediate mainly applied for organic synthesis, organometallic preparation and specialty chemical production, forbidden for food, pharmaceutical excipient and cosmetic direct addition. Its terminal C-Cl bond readily proceeds with nucleophilic substitution reaction to produce n-octyl amine, octanol derivatives, quaternary ammonium surfactants used in industrial detergent and phase-transfer catalyst manufacturing. It serves as core raw material for Grignard reagent (n-octylmagnesium chloride) synthesis in laboratory and custom fine chemical development, widely used for carbon-chain elongation in agrochemical intermediate, oil-field chemical additive synthesis. High-purity analytical grade acts as GC reference standard for alkyl halide residual testing in third-party labs and environmental water sample detection. Additionally, it is applied for hydrophobic modification of natural polysaccharide such as carrageenan in polymer material research, also used as low-polar inert solvent for special organic extraction in fine chemical workshops.
GHS Dangerous substance with hazard codes H304(May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways), H410(Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects), flammable liquid with volatile combustible vapor forming explosive mixture with air above flash point. All feeding and sampling operations must be finished inside ventilated fume hood; operators wear nitrile solvent-resistant gloves, splash-proof full-face goggles and anti-solvent lab coat to avoid liquid splash and vapor inhalation. Upon skin contact, continuously rinse contaminated skin with plenty of soapy running water over 15 minutes; flush eyes with abundant clean water for minimum 15 min once splashed and seek ophthalmic treatment for persistent irritation. Accidental oral ingestion shall not induce vomiting to prevent pulmonary aspiration; drink proper amount of paraffin oil and send patient to hospital urgently. Waste liquid and contaminated waste are classified as hazardous organic waste and delivered to certified qualified disposal institute per local environmental regulation, strictly prohibited to discharge into sewer or discard as domestic rubbish. Store separately from strong oxidizers, sodium/potassium metal and concentrated strong base to avoid violent exothermic substitution and fire risk.
