Application

Hectorite (CAS 12173-47-6) is a synthetic magnesium lithium silicate clay mineral with excellent thickening, thixotropic, suspending, and emulsifying properties. It is widely used in cosmetics and personal care products as a viscosity controller, bulking agent, and adsorbent, improving texture, stability, and skin feel in creams, lotions, gels, and makeup. In the paint and coating industry, it acts as a rheology modifier and anti-settling agent, enhancing suspension and application properties. It also serves as a stabilizer and thickener in pharmaceutical formulations, a carrier for catalysts, and a filler in plastics and rubber. Additionally, it is used in drilling fluids, ceramics, and water treatment due to its high thermal stability and chemical inertness.

Safety Information

GHS Classification: Eye Irritation (Category 2A)
Hazards: Low acute toxicity; no skin sensitization or carcinogenicity reported. May cause mild eye irritation (redness, tearing) due to mechanical abrasion. Inhalation of fine dust may cause transient respiratory tract irritation.
Handling: Wear safety goggles, nitrile gloves, and dust mask in well-ventilated areas. Avoid dust inhalation and eye contact. Wash hands thoroughly after handling.
First Aid: Skin—rinse with water; eyes—flush with clean water for 15 minutes and seek medical help if irritation persists; inhalation—move to fresh air; ingestion—rinse mouth and consult a physician if large amounts are swallowed.
Storage & Disposal: Store sealed in dry place; avoid strong acids. Dispose as non-hazardous waste per local regulations; prevent environmental release.
