Application

Octanohydroxamic acid (CHA) is a hydroxamic acid derivative widely used in cosmetics, personal care, and mineral flotation. In cosmetics, it acts as a chelating agent, preservative booster, and mild antimicrobial. It efficiently chelates Fe2?/Fe3?, Cu2?, and Al3?, inhibiting mold growth by depriving microbes of essential metal ions. It enhances the efficacy of mild preservatives (e.g., phenoxyethanol) and is ideal for preservative-free or low-prescription formulations. Suitable for emulsions, anhydrous products, shampoos, and color cosmetics, it works well across pH 4–7 and is compatible with most surfactants and proteins. In mineral processing, it serves as a flotation collector for metal oxide ores (e.g., iron, copper, aluminum), improving separation efficiency. It also acts as a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor in research, with potential applications in epigenetic studies and drug development.

Safety Information

CHA is low-toxic with no significant skin irritation or sensitization potential, making it safe for cosmetic use. Inhalation of dust may cause mild respiratory irritation; avoid breathing dust or mist. Skin contact is generally non-irritating, but prolonged exposure may cause mild dryness; wear gloves for industrial handling. Eye contact may cause transient redness or discomfort; rinse eyes with water for 15 minutes if exposed. Ingestion of large amounts may cause nausea, vomiting, or abdominal discomfort; no acute toxicity reported at typical doses. It is environmentally friendly and readily biodegradable. Handle in well-ventilated areas; wear gloves, safety goggles, and dust mask if needed. Store in sealed, light-resistant containers away from oxidizing agents. Dispose of waste per local regulations; no special hazardous handling required.
