Application

Sodium polystyrene sulfonate is a versatile anionic water-soluble polymer with excellent dispersing, flocculating and ion-exchange properties. In chemical industry, it acts as high-efficiency dispersant for pigments, dyes, ceramics and water-based coatings, preventing particle agglomeration and improving system stability. In water treatment, it serves as scale inhibitor and flocculant to remove suspended solids and control mineral scaling. In pharmaceutical field, it is widely used as oral potassium-binding resin for clinical treatment of hyperkalemia, absorbing excess potassium ions in intestinal tract and excreting them out of body. It is also applied in paper-making industry as surface sizing agent and retention aid to enhance paper strength. In daily chemicals, it functions as thickener and stabilizer in detergents and personal care products. Besides, it is a common analytical reagent and standard material for molecular weight calibration in gel permeation chromatography. With adjustable molecular weight and outstanding water solubility, this polymer is extensively used across industrial manufacturing, medical treatment and laboratory research.

Safety Information

This polymer is low-toxic and generally safe for regular handling. Fine powder may irritate respiratory tract when inhaled, causing mild cough and throat discomfort. Direct skin contact rarely leads to irritation, while long-term contact with concentrated solution may cause slight dryness. Eye contact with dust or solution will result in stinging and conjunctival irritation. Operate in well-ventilated environment, wear dust-proof mask, chemical-resistant gloves and safety goggles to avoid direct contact and dust dispersion. It may decompose under strong heating, releasing toxic sulfur oxide and carbon monoxide fumes. Keep away from strong oxidants and concentrated acids during storage and use. Store sealed in cool dry place, and separate from food and drinking water supplies. In case of leakage, collect powder with inert materials and avoid dust spreading. Rinse contaminated skin with plenty of running water; flush eyes continuously with water for at least 15 minutes if exposure occurs. Dispose of waste and contaminated materials in accordance with local environmental regulations to avoid pollution.
