Applications

CAS 608-68-4 is a chiral building block and auxiliary widely used in asymmetric synthesis, pharmaceutical chemistry, and fine chemicals. As a diester derivative of natural L-tartaric acid, it has two chiral centers and excellent stereoselectivity. It serves as a key chiral ligand or auxiliary for enantioselective epoxidation of allylic alcohols, asymmetric α-halogenation of acetals, and synthesis of chiral heterocyclic compounds. In pharmaceutical synthesis, it is used to prepare chiral intermediates for antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and anti-cancer agents, where it controls the stereochemistry of drug molecules to enhance efficacy and reduce side effects. It is also used in polymer chemistry to synthesize chiral polymers with optical activity and biodegradability, as well as in agrochemicals for chiral herbicides and fungicides. In analytical chemistry, it acts as a chiral derivatization reagent for separating enantiomers of alcohols, amines, and carboxylic acids in HPLC and GC.

Safety Information

Classified as GHS07 (H302, H315, H319, H335); low acute toxicity, irritant.
  • Inhalation: Mist/dust may irritate respiratory tract (cough, sore throat); use local exhaust and respirator.
  • Skin Contact: Causes mild irritation (redness, itching); wear nitrile gloves, wash skin with soap and water.
  • Eye Contact: Causes severe irritation (stinging, tearing, redness); wear safety goggles, rinse eyes with water for ≥15 minutes and seek medical help.
  • Ingestion: Harmful if swallowed (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain); do not induce vomiting, drink water and seek medical aid.
  • Chemical Hazards: Stable under normal conditions; avoid strong oxidants, strong bases, and high temperatures (>200 °C), which may cause decomposition and release toxic fumes (CO?, CO).
  • Storage: Keep in cool, dry, well-ventilated area in tightly sealed containers; separate from incompatible substances.
  • Disposal: Dispose of waste per local hazardous waste regulations; avoid release to environment.
