Applications
α-Pinene Oxide (CAS 74525-43-2) is a critical terpene epoxide derived from α-pinene, widely used in fragrance, flavor, pharmaceutical, and fine chemical industries. As a key intermediate, it undergoes ring-opening reactions to produce linalool, geraniol, and other high-value aroma chemicals for perfumes, cosmetics, and household products. In flavors, it enhances citrus, pine, and woody notes in food, beverages, and tobacco. In pharmaceuticals, it serves as a synthetic building block for antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents, and insecticides. It is also used as a reactive diluent in epoxy resins and as a crosslinking agent in polymer synthesis. Additionally, it acts as a biodegradable surfactant and green solvent in cleaning and coating formulations.
Safety Information
α-Pinene Oxide is classified as GHS02 (Flammable Liquid, Category 3); GHS07 (H315, H319, H335). Flammability: Flammable liquid; vapor may form explosive mixtures with air; keep away from heat, sparks, and open flames. Inhalation: Vapor/mist irritates respiratory tract (cough, dizziness); use ventilation and respiratory protection. Skin Contact: Causes mild irritation (redness, dryness); wear nitrile gloves and wash skin with soap and water. Eye Contact: Severe irritation (stinging, tearing); rinse eyes with water for ≥15 minutes and seek medical help. Ingestion: May cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea; do not induce vomiting. Storage: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area in tightly sealed containers; separate from oxidants and acids. Disposal: Dispose of waste per local hazardous waste regulations; avoid release to environment.
