Applications

BIS-GMA (CAS 1565-94-2) is the primary dental resin monomer, the backbone of modern composite restoratives, bonding agents, and sealants in dentistry. As a dimethacrylate, it copolymerizes with diluents (e.g., TEGDMA) under photoinitiation (camphorquinone) to form rigid, biocompatible polymer networks with excellent mechanical strength, adhesion to enamel/dentin, and low shrinkage. It provides high crosslink density and hydrolytic stability, critical for long-term oral service. Beyond dentistry, it serves as a high-performance crosslinker for UV-curable coatings, adhesives, and 3D-printing resins, imparting hardness, chemical resistance, and thermal stability. It is also used in orthodontic bonding resins and as a reactive diluent in epoxy formulations.

Safety Information

BIS-GMA is classified as GHS07 (H315, H317, H319, H335): irritant and skin sensitizer. Inhalation of vapor/mist may cause respiratory irritation (cough, tightness); use local exhaust and respiratory protection. Skin contact: frequent/prolonged exposure causes irritation (redness, dryness) and allergic dermatitis in sensitized individuals; wear nitrile gloves and wash skin thoroughly. Eye contact: severe irritation (stinging, tearing, redness); rinse with water for ≥15 minutes and seek medical help. Ingestion: may cause gastrointestinal discomfort; do not induce vomiting.
