Basic Information
- CAS Number: 9002-89-5
- Molecular Formula: (C?H?O)? (n=500–5000, average degree of polymerization)
- Molecular Weight: 25,000–300,000 g/mol (varies with polymerization degree)
- Synonyms: PVA; PVOH; Poly(vinyl alcohol); Polyvinyl alcohol resin
- Classification: Water-soluble polymer, synthetic resin, film-forming agent, adhesive, pharmaceutical excipient
Physical & Chemical Properties
- Appearance: White/milky white amorphous powder, odorless, tasteless, free of visible impurities; soluble in hot water without sediment.
- Melting Point: 230–240℃; decomposes above 200℃, producing irritating smoke.
- Boiling Point: ≈340℃ (atmospheric pressure), decomposes before boiling.
- Solubility: Soluble in hot water (above 80℃) and hot hydroxyl-containing solvents; slightly soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide; insoluble in common organic solvents (acetone, benzene, etc.).
- Stability: Stable under normal conditions and neutral/weak acid environments; unstable in strong alkali; moisture-absorbent, incompatible with strong oxidants.
- Key Parameters: Density 1.19–1.31 g/cm3 (25℃); Flash Point 270℃; Refractive Index 1.49–1.52; Viscosity 4–65 mPa·s (20℃, 4% w/v).
Uses
PVA is a non-toxic water-soluble polymer with excellent film-forming and bonding properties, widely used in textile (sizing agent), paper (adhesive), construction (coatings, glue), pharmaceutical (excipient), cosmetic (thickener) and agricultural industries. It is also used as a laboratory reagent for polymer research.
Packaging & Storage
Packaging: 10g/25g/50g plastic bottles (laboratory), 1kg/5kg aluminum foil bags (small-batch), 25kg/50kg drums (bulk), all labeled clearly. Storage: Keep in cool, dry, well-ventilated area (15–25℃), sealed to avoid moisture; shelf life 24 months. Avoid high temperature, strong oxidants and violent collision during transportation.
